Like in 2018, the 2nd ABINEP Symposium was organized by the 21 fellows themselves. They developed a very interesting scientific program consisting of their own project presentations in terms of talks and posters, and of presentations of invited guest speakers. Within each module, the fellows invited a guest speaker of their choice, who shared their knowledge with the scholars and gave advices on their PhD projects and career planning in round table discussions.

The symposium was opened with a short welcome note by the ABINEP speaker and the director of the institute of physiology, Prof. Dr. Volkmar Leßmann. First keynote speaker was Prof. Dr. Maria J.G.T Vehreschild from the University Hospital Frankfurt/ Main, Infectiology Group, and University Hospital Cologne, Clinical Microbiome Research Group, who was hosted by the fellows from module 3. Maria Vehreschild gave an exciting talk on the clinical perspective of Microbiota-based infection prevention and pointed to the importance of the results from basic research, which will is necessary to improve the hospital treatments in future. Afterwards, the fellows from module 3 showed the great progress of their PhD projects and took questions from fellows from the other 3 modules. During the late afternoon and early evening some fellows used the possibility to present the progress of their projects during the poster session.

On the 3rd of September 2019, the modules 2 and 4 where in focus. Prof. Dr. Tobias Donner from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Integrative Neuroscience Group explained with such a great enthusiasm the understanding variability in brain and behavior. In the afternoon session Dr. Sanja Bauer Mikulovic from the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases Bonn, Neuronal Networks Group showed how hippocampal neuronal networks influence cognitive, emotional and motor learning. After each guest speaker all fellows per module used the chance to present their latest data. The evening was used to get some impressions of the venue and to discuss science in a more informal atmosphere.

The final session on the 4th of September 2019 was open by Dr. Sonja M. Best from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectionus Diseases, Rocky Mountain Laboratories Hamilton, Montana, United States, Innate Immunity and Pathogenesis Section. In her talk, she presented many details of the immune system reaction to flavivirus, before the fellows of module 1 showed their results on neuroinflammation.

The successful symposium 2019 was closed with remarks by Prof. Leßmann, where he emphasized the great quality of talks of all, guest speakers and fellows.
